The Lexmark X4550 was introduced in 2007 as an AIO (all-in-one) that was noted for offering Wi-Fi in what was a very welcomed low-cost package. Many described it as an inexpensive, all-in-one printer quite suited for home use where the Wi-Fi connection boosted the price. The X4650 replaces the X4550 offering some needed improvement that was not found in its predecessor. It's a definite choice of a printer that should be examined when needing the convenience of a Wi-Fi connection while remaining on a tight budget but wanting to have an all-in-one, multifunctional printer.
Ease of Operation Is Main Benefit
This inexpensive Lexmark printer allows the user to pursue several functions easily including scanning, copying and printing. The machine produces up to 25 black ppm or 18 colour ppm. Additionally, the device can handle printing photographs coming directly off memory cards placed in an available slot, from PictBridge compatible cameras plus all types of USB flash drives.
It has optical character recognition (OCR) software that allows for the easy scanning of documents with text. Additionally, a Lexmark toolbar is provided that makes Internet printing quite easy. Users can schedule the printing of different websites on a recurring basis automatically. It also possesses a flatbed scanner that allows users to accommodate different media sizes and thicknesses including many large books.
Use It as a Standalone Copier
Although the X4650 Wi-Fi attributes are great features, the machine has plenty more to offer - including the ability to act as a standalone copier. The device either can receive scan commands through a user computer or included through the device's own menu selections. One of its features includes a scan to e-mail function that will open up a message on a user's computer and will scan this message saving it as a document file.
Although the machine does not have its own fax modem, it will find the modem in a user's computer that will allow for scanning and faxing quite simply if the computer allow such activity. E-mail and fax features are quite suited for those working from a home office. Unfortunately, the lack of an automatic document feeder limits the machine to relatively short-run, light-duty activity. One welcome feature is highlighted by an easily read LED menu screen.
Photo Printing Is Made Easy
Users are treated to a machine that can easily print proof sheets of photos from a memory card or instruct the printer on how to print the photos. Photo printing choices are available where a user can instruct a printer to print all photos or select individual ones to be printed. Other photo printing features include selecting the photo amount and what size they are to be printed. There is also an auto-enhanced feature that will automatically upgrade the quality of your photographic images. The machine does present an impressive array of photo-centric features for a product that Lexmark states it doesn't expect users to employ printing many photos.
Considering all the quality features, the product is also easy to set up and has a small footprint so you can find ample room for it on a desk or table.

If you're among the three million British citizens now working from home, you'll know the importance of keeping computer equipment as compact as possible. An all-in-one printer that also functions as a scanner and photocopier can make life much easier. Six of these printers went on the test bench for individual all-in-one printer reviews.
The Canon Pixma MP520 is an attractive all-round printer. Print and scan speeds are high, running costs are low, and photo sharpness scored well in the all-in-one printer reviews. With a compact design, two paper trays, and 2.4in colour display, it is generally priced at £95 or £80.
The Lexmark X4550, a wireless printer, operates anywhere in the house using your wi-fi network. It produces fine print quality, clear photos, and colour prints. In all-in-one printer reviews, however, it rates poorly for grainy, low resolution scanning and slow and sometimes distorted photocopying. Cost is generally £75.
The HP Photosmart C5280 scores well for its fast, high quality printing of photos and text. It also produces good high resolution scans despite a problem with straight lines. However, it is noisy and its photocopying has outline and colour problems. Generally priced at £100, it is available for £62.
The Brother MFC-465CN is a network printer whose Ethernet port allows printing from a wi-fi enabled laptop even if the main computer is not turned on. It has the added attraction of working as a fax machine. Slow speed, however, is a problem. Generally priced at £130, it is available for £112.
The Epson Stylus DX8400 has the slowest photo printing speed of those in the all-in-one printer reviews. Text printing is also slow; there are colour problems with scanning and copying, and printing costs are double those of its competitors. Generally priced at £75, it is available for £62.
The Lexmark X2550 has acceptable text and colour printing and running costs are reasonable, but operation is slow. Scans are grainy and of low resolution. Suitable for those whose printing needs are minimal and generally priced at £55, the Lexmark is available for £38.
